Korcula island, Croatia

September 20, 2017 By travellingoven 5 Comments

Sure, we all love sunshine and clear blue sky but if you ask me, there is something magical in an ordinary, slightly melancholic rainy day. I don’t know if it’s the calming sound of the rain drops, beautiful moody light or the peaceful feeling as if the time stands still when most people hide from the rain and you get the streets all for yourself. Whatever it is, the fact is that I love rainy days. Ok I love sunshine too but that’s another story! So recently, while I was spending part of my Summer on Adriatic coast, I decided to catch an early morning ferry and spend one of those rainy days on Korcula island and explore it with camera in one hand and umbrella in other. Maybe I’m romantic at heart but I find wandering the narrow streets full of history, where every window, balcony, church and charming little square tell a story of the passed times, incredibly charming and inspiring.

I bet you know already that Croatia has over thousand islands and most of them are small uninhabited pieces of paradise, however Korcula is one of those larger and inhabited islands, in fact it’s the 6th largest Adriatic island, stretching nearly 47km in length. Besides charming little towns and fishing villages, there are vineyards, olive groves, pine forests, picturesque little bays and beaches and of course tradition and history visible in every stone, old wall and church bell.

One of my favourite places to experience that historic charm is the old town of Korcula that is surrounded by walls and although quite small, filled with beauty and interesting sites worth seeing like the Town museum, St Mark’s Cathedral, St Peter’s Church, Marco Polo’s house etc…

My favourite are small courtyards of old houses where people live their everyday lives probably not thinking too much or too often about the past and all those people who lived there before them. But as a visitor you can’t escape those thoughts and daydreaming about a romantic lovers encounter under that charming little balcony or think about the people who walked those narrow cobbled streets and climbed those beautiful stairs leading to 13th century Revelin Tower gate.

So I spent my day walking, daydreaming, photographing, enjoying those views and sites and when the rain and wind became a bit too much, I looked for a shelter in the cutest little cafe Arula, sat by the window so I can look at the rain while enjoying my coffee and a traditional sweet pastry called ‘Cukarin’.

I hope you enjoyed this little walk through the streets of Korcula with me on one ordinary but at the same time magical rainy day…

Beautiful photos Lili. It’s nice to see more of croatia even if through a screen. I visited Ugljan a couple of years ago and fell in love with wandering around the island and finding hidden coves. I definitely want to visit Croatia again, but had no idea there was SO many islands. How will I choose?!

Thank you so much Stacey, I’m so glad you like the photos! Oh you’ve been to Ugljan? I’ve been only once there as a child, it’s very small but pretty island and there are so many many more worth visiting and exploring! 🙂

I’m beyond grateful for all the opportunities an I’m beyond grateful for all the opportunities and wonderful people I had a pleasure to work with in 2022 so here are just few moments from different shoots.. In my private life I’m grateful for all the lessons this year gave me, even if the road was difficult and painful at times. But step by step I’m getting there or at least moving in the right direction. We can only do our best and keep trying, learning, being gentle to ourselves when it gets tough. I appreciate so much my people who are always there for me every step of the way! 🥰
I would like to wish you all a very happy new year! ✨🥂 May your dreams and wishes come true and hope that the new year will bring more love, kindness and peace to all of us! ❤️
